WWII Forts
One walk I was very keen to do on the island was the Forts Walk. World War II bunkers and in fact a whole community (I am sure that is not the word for it) of soldiers was positioned up on a hill on the island. Most of the buildings for day to day operations are gone, with only a few concrete slabs still showing, but the Command Post, Observation Tower, Ammunition Bunker, and Gun stations are a still complete.
No I am not into war history – they make great photos – and this walk is also the one where you are most likely to see koalas. Magnetic Island has Northern Ausrtalia’s largest colony of wild koalas. The koalas here are also disease free.
